Universal Swine Influenza Vaccine 

SIV - Disease Description

Swine influenza is a major acute respiratory disease of pigs, usually with high morbidity and low mortality, but causing fever, coughing, nasal discharge, reduced feed intake, slower weight gain, uneven finishing groups and, in co-infections with PRRSV, Mycoplasma or bacterial pathogens, more severe porcine respiratory disease complex. WOAH notes that morbidity can reach 100%, and that the main economic effect is delayed growth and more days to market weight.

 

Swine influenza A viruses are endemic in the USA, China, Japan, South Korea, the EU and other major pig-producing regions, with H1N1, H1N2 and H3N2 as the principal circulating subtypes; however, their antigenic lineages differ strongly between North America, Europe and Asia, with reassortment between swine, human and avian-origin viruses creating a moving target for conventional strain-matched vaccines.

Current official annual country-by-country loss figures are not available because swine influenza is not WOAH-notifiable, but available benchmarks suggest large continuing exposure: published estimates place US finishing losses at about US$10 per pig when PRDC co-infections are included, and a 10–20% affected-pig scenario applied to current pork production implies potential annual losses of roughly US$660 million–1.3 billion in China, US$240–490 million in the EU, US$140–280 million in the USA, US$14–28 million in Japan, US$16–32 million in South Korea, and US$1.3–2.6 billion worldwide, excluding trade shocks such as the 2009 H1N1-related US pork market disruption, which was estimated at US$1.1 billion.

Universal Swine Influenza Vaccine in Development

Disease Challenge

Swine influenza remains one of the most important respiratory viral diseases affecting pig production worldwide. The disease is complicated by the circulation of multiple subtypes, including H1N1, H1N2 and H3N2, as well as by regional differences between North American, European and Asian lineages.

 

This viral diversity can reduce the reliability of strain-matched vaccine approaches and creates a continuing need for broader and more adaptable vaccine strategies.

 

GeminiVax Vaccine Concept

GeminiVax is developing a broadly protective swine influenza vaccine candidate based on an attenuated influenza-vector platform and rationally selected immune targets.

The candidate is designed to address major swine influenza subtypes while focusing immune responses on selected conserved targets that may be less vulnerable to antigenic drift.

 

Target Immune Response

The vaccine concept is intended to stimulate both cellular and humoral immunity, including cytotoxic T-cell responses against conserved viral targets and antibody responses against selected protective epitopes.

Expected Differentiation

The programme aims to move beyond narrow strain matching by combining vector-based delivery, conserved epitope selection and flexible antigen-cassette design.

Development Status

This vaccine candidate is under development and is not yet a registered veterinary product.
